Ballycastle Castle

Ballycastle Castle was a historic fortress situated in the town of Ballycastle within County Antrim, Northern Ireland. The site holds a deep lineage, originally existing during the era of John Mór Tanister in the early fifteenth century before being significantly rebuilt by Sorley Boy MacDonnell in 1564. Its strategic importance was quickly realized when it was occupied by the powerful Irish chieftain Shane O'Neill just a year later. The structure underwent further transformation in the seventeenth century when Sir Randal MacDonnell, the first Earl of Antrim, removed the older fortification and erected a new castle on the grounds in 1625, establishing a renewed seat of power for the family.

The castle played a turbulent role during the Irish Confederate Wars, falling into the hands of Scottish troops in 1642 and subsequently being held by Cromwellian forces. Following these conflicts, the property was restored to Alexander MacDonnell, the third Earl of Antrim, in 1665. Despite this return to family ownership, the building eventually succumbed to neglect and decay over the following centuries. By the mid-nineteenth century, the once-mighty structure had become a ruin, leading to its final removal in 1856 by Charles Kirkpatrick of Whitehall.

Today, Ballycastle Castle no longer stands, having been completely dismantled leaving only its historical memory behind. While no physical remnants of the architectural style survive to be viewed by the public, the site remains significant for its connection to the prominent MacDonnell clan and the volatile military history of Ulster. Its story spans from medieval Gaelic lordship through the plantation era and civil wars, serving as a testament to the shifting powers that defined the region before its ultimate disappearance from the landscape in the Victorian age.
