Bacon's Castle

Bacon's Castle, located in Surry County, Virginia, stands as the oldest documented brick dwelling in the United States. Constructed in 1665 for wealthy merchant and Justice of the Peace Arthur Allen, the structure is an exceptionally rare example of Carolean architecture in the New World, later incorporating Greek Revival elements. Situated near the James River, the house was originally known as the Arthur Allen House or Allen's Brick House. Its historical importance is formally recognized through its designation as a National Historic Landmark in 1960 and its listing on the Virginia Landmarks Register, cementing its status as a premier site for understanding early colonial life and construction techniques.

The property gained its famous moniker during Bacon's Rebellion in 1676, when followers of Nathaniel Bacon seized and fortified the residence, using it as a garrison for over three months. Despite the name, historical records confirm that Nathaniel Bacon never lived at nor visited the castle himself, a fact that contradicts popular folklore. The rebellion saw various commanders holding the structure against colonial forces until the uprising eventually declined. This dramatic episode transformed a private residence into a symbol of colonial unrest, adding a layer of military history to its architectural significance.

Today, Bacon's Castle operates as a historic house museum managed by Preservation Virginia, a non-profit organization dedicated to heritage conservation. The site remains open for public visitation, allowing guests to explore its unique interior and grounds. As one of the few surviving examples of seventeenth-century high-style brick architecture in America, it continues to serve as an educational resource and a preserved link to the nation's earliest colonial era.
