Bač Fortress is a medieval fortification located in the town of Bač within the Vojvodina region of Serbia. While historical chronicles indicate an earlier Avar settlement existed on the site as far back as 873, the current structure was commissioned by Charles I of Hungary and constructed between 1338 and 1342. Built primarily from brick, stone, and terracotta, the fortress features walls reaching approximately twenty meters in height. It stands as the best-preserved medieval fort in Vojvodina and represents a significant example of Hungarian military architecture from the fourteenth century, serving as a crucial defensive rampart for the kingdom.

Historically, the site evolved from a royal city and ecclesiastical seat under the Árpád dynasty into a strategic military stronghold. Following its construction, Bač Fortress became the most important Hungarian defense against invading Ottoman forces, remaining in active use until 1704 when it was demolished. The fortress witnessed centuries of administrative and military activity, hosting royal councils and serving as the residence for county governors known as ispáns. Its long history reflects the turbulent geopolitical shifts in the Carpathian Basin, transitioning from a center of local governance to a frontline fortification before eventually falling into ruin.

Today, the fortress is owned by the Republic of Serbia and has been designated a Spatial Cultural-Historical Unit of Exceptional Importance since 1948. Although partially restored, the site remains open to the public, allowing visitors to explore its extensive remains. Conservation efforts continue to preserve the structure, ensuring that this key piece of Serbian and Hungarian heritage survives for future generations. The location serves not only as a tourist attraction but also as a tangible link to the region's complex medieval past and its role in resisting Ottoman expansion.
