# Azuchi Castle

Azuchi Castle was a monumental Japanese fortress constructed between 1576 and 1579 by the powerful warlord Oda Nobunaga. Situated on Mount Azuchi in the former Ōmi Province, now part of Ōmihachiman in Shiga Prefecture, the structure stood on the eastern shores of Lake Biwa within the present-day Biwako Quasi-National Park. Its strategic placement allowed Nobunaga to monitor the approaches to Kyoto while remaining safe from the city's frequent fires and conflicts. Furthermore, the location provided superior control over communication and transportation routes, enabling effective management of military campaigns against rival clans such as the Uesugi, Takeda, and Mōri.

Architecturally, the castle represented a revolutionary departure from previous earthen fortifications, establishing the template for early modern Japanese castles during the Azuchi-Momoyama period. Rising seven stories high with stone bases and plastered walls, it served not only as a military stronghold but also as a political showpiece demonstrating Nobunaga's authority. The site hosted significant historical events, including the famous Azuchi religious debate in 1579. However, the magnificent keep had a short lifespan; it was demolished in 1582 following Nobunaga's assassination during the Honno-ji Incident by his retainer Akechi Mitsuhide.

Today, the original wooden structures no longer exist, but the massive stone foundation remains intact at the site. Recognized for its immense cultural value, the location was designated a National Historic Site in 1926 and upgraded to a Special National Historic Site in 1952. While the main keep is gone, the ruins stand as a testament to a pivotal moment in Japanese history when castle design shifted from purely defensive earthworks to grand symbols of power that would define the landscape for centuries to come.
