Ater Fort

Ater Fort is a historic 17th-century structure situated approximately 35 kilometers west of Bhind in the Bhind district of Madhya Pradesh, India. Constructed between 1664 and 1668 by the Bhadauria kings Badan Singh, Maha Singh, and Bakhat Singh, the fort was designed by the architect Mia Tashe Khan. Its architectural design represents a unique fusion of Rajput styles with distinct Bhadawari and Mughal influences. The complex houses several notable internal structures, including the Khooni Darwaza, Badan Singh Ka Mahal, Hathiapor, Raja Ka Bangla, Rani Ka Bangla, and the Barah Khamba Mahal, showcasing the grandeur of the era in which it was built.

The fort holds significant historical importance due to its role in regional power struggles during the 18th century. In March 1737, it became the site of a major conflict when forces of the Maratha Confederacy, led by the renowned general Malhar Rao Holkar under the command of Bajirao I, attempted an invasion. However, the Maharaja of Bhadawar, Aniruddh Singh, formed a strategic coalition with Saadat Khan, the Nawab of Awadh. Their combined forces successfully surrounded and defeated the Maratha troops at Ater, forcing Holkar to flee toward Gwalior. This decisive victory is historically noted for challenging the contemporary perception of Bajirao I as an invincible commander, marking a rare and significant defeat for his cavalry.

Today, Ater Fort stands as a testament to the military and architectural heritage of the Bhadauria rulers and the broader history of Madhya Pradesh.
