Assos Castle is a historic Venetian fortification located on the island of Cephalonia in western Greece. Perched atop a 170-meter rocky hill that encompasses the entire peninsula of Assos, the site overlooks the bay of Agia Kyriaki. Constructed between 1593 and 1596 under the direction of the Republic of Venice, the castle was designed by the architect Marino Gentillini using local limestone. Its primary purpose was to defend the island against Ottoman expansion and frequent pirate raids, serving as a strategic naval base. The massive structure features a defensive wall stretching 2,000 meters in length, enclosing an area of 44,000 square meters, which once included plans for a new administrative city to replace the existing capital at St. George's Castle.

The historical significance of Assos Castle is underscored by its reputation for immense strength; British General Charles James Napier famously described it as being stronger than Gibraltar. Throughout the centuries, control of the fortress shifted from the Venetians to the Septinsular Republic and later to the United States of the Ionian Islands under British protection. Today, the property is owned by the Hellenic Ministry of Culture and is open to the public. Although the castle currently stands as a ruin, it remains one of the main tourist attractions on Kefalonia. Visitors can explore the extensive grounds and view the remnants of what was once a critical piece of military architecture, offering panoramic views of the surrounding Ionian Sea and the rugged peninsula below.
