Arg of Karim Khan

The Arg of Karim Khan, also known as the Karim Khan Citadel, is a historic fortress located in the heart of Shiraz, Iran. Constructed between 1766 and 1767 under the direction of Karim Khan Zand, the founder of the Zand dynasty, this rectangular structure served as both the ruler's private residence and the military headquarters of his government. The citadel exemplifies traditional Iranian architecture with distinct influences from the Safavid era, featuring four high walls connected by fourteen-meter-high round brick towers. Its robust design includes walls that are three meters thick at the base, reflecting its dual purpose as a secure imperial residence and a defensive stronghold resembling a medieval fortress.

Historically, the site has witnessed significant political shifts and changes in function. Although Agha Mohammad Khan Qajar ordered the demolition of many Zand-era buildings after conquering Shiraz, the citadel was spared and subsequently repurposed as a court for local governors. During the early Pahlavi era, the building was converted into a prison, a period during which many of its original interior paintings were unfortunately plastered over. This chapter of its history ended in 1971 when the property was transferred to Iran's Cultural Heritage Organization, leading to extensive renovation efforts that began in 1977 to restore its former glory.

Today, the Arg of Karim Khan stands as a protected national heritage site and operates as a museum managed by the Ministry of Cultural Heritage, Tourism and Handicrafts. Situated near Shahrdari Square, the complex covers a land area of 4,000 square meters within a larger compound. It remains one of the most prominent landmarks in Shiraz, offering visitors a glimpse into the architectural grandeur and turbulent history of eighteenth-century Iran. The preservation of this citadel ensures that the legacy of Karim Khan Zand and the artistic achievements of his reign continue to be celebrated by locals and tourists alike.
