Aoba Castle, also historically known as Sendai Castle, is a prominent hilltop-style Japanese fortress located in Sendai, Miyagi Prefecture. Constructed in 1601 by the renowned feudal lord Date Masamune, the castle served as the administrative center and home of the Date clan throughout the Edo period. The site sits on a plateau overlooking the city and the Hirose River, utilizing natural cliffs and a rare surviving virgin forest for defense. Its design featured a high inner bailey surrounded by massive stone walls and protective towers, though the main keep was never fully built beyond its foundation. The lord's residence within the inner sanctum was famous for its flamboyant Momoyama architectural style, which contemporaries favorably compared to the legendary Jurakudai Palace in Kyoto.

The castle holds significant historical value as the seat of power for one of Japan's most influential domains. While the original structures, including the main gate, were destroyed by fire during the aerial bombing of Sendai in 1945, the ruins remain an important cultural landmark. In 2003, the site was officially designated as a National Historic Site of Japan. Today, the grounds are open to the public and feature reconstructed elements, such as a side tower, allowing visitors to visualize the former grandeur of the complex. The surrounding forest area is currently managed as a botanical garden by Tohoku University, preserving a unique piece of the region's natural history alongside the archaeological remains of the samurai era.
