Ansembourg Castle

Ansembourg Old Castle, also known as the Vieux Château d'Ansembourg, is a historic medieval fortress located high above the village of Ansembourg in central Luxembourg. As one of the prominent structures within the famous Valley of the Seven Castles, its origins date back to the mid-12th century, with the property first mentioned in historical records in 1135 under Lord Hubert d'Ansembourg. The castle features classic medieval architectural elements, including a south-western tower gate and a northern keep constructed in the early 14th century. Although it suffered damage from French troops in 1683, the structure has remained largely unaltered since the era of Jakob II de Raville-Ansembourg, with its main entrance bearing the date 1565.

The castle holds significant historical value as the ancestral home of the Counts of Ansembourg and remains the private residence of the current Count and Countess. In recent years, the site gained scholarly attention when the Codex Mariendalensis, a crucial manuscript written in an early dialect of Luxembourgish, was discovered within the family archives in 1999. While the interior of the castle is not open to the public, the surrounding gardens are accessible on select days. Additionally, the estate has adapted to modern times; in 2011, a boutique hotel and bed-and-breakfast featuring seven rooms was established in an adjacent building, allowing visitors to experience the atmosphere of this ancient stronghold without entering the private residence itself.
