Angelokastro (Corfu)

Angelokastro is a historic Byzantine citadel located on the Greek island of Corfu, specifically situated on the northwest coast near the village of Palaiokastritsa. Perched atop the highest peak of the island's shoreline, the fortress stands approximately one thousand feet above the Ionian Sea on particularly precipitous and rocky terrain. This strategic elevation allowed it to survey the City of Corfu and the mountains of mainland Greece, serving as a critical component of the island's defensive network. The structure was constructed using hewn ashlar stone, though the exact date of its origin remains uncertain, with estimates ranging from the 5th to the 7th century. Some historical theories suggest it may have been built or reinforced during the late 12th century by members of the Angelos Komnenos family during a turbulent era of regional independence.

Throughout its long history, Angelokastro changed hands numerous times, reflecting the complex political shifts in the Ionian Sea. It was controlled by the Byzantine Empire, briefly held by Bohemund of Taranto, and later passed to the House of Anjou before becoming a Venetian stronghold from 1386 until 1797. Subsequent rulers included the French, the Septinsular Republic, and the British-administered United States of the Ionian Islands before finally becoming part of modern Greece. The castle played a notable role during the Siege of Corfu in 1716 and features remnants of battlements, a circular protective tower, and the church of Archangel Michael within its acropolis.

Today, Angelokastro exists as a ruin under the ownership and management of the Greek Ministry of Culture and Sports. Despite its aged condition, the site remains open to the public and is accessible via a path from the nearby village of Krini. Visitors can observe the front view of the castle, including the remnants of its defensive walls and the small church at the summit. Its dramatic location and layered history make it a significant landmark for understanding the military architecture and geopolitical struggles that shaped Corfu over the centuries.
