Alwar is a city located in Rajasthan, India, serving as the administrative headquarters of Alwar District. Positioned 150 kilometers south of Delhi and 150 kilometers north of Jaipur, the city occupies a strategic location in northern Rajasthan. According to historical records, Alwar was established in 1106, though various theories exist regarding the origin of its name. Some scholars suggest it derives from the Salva tribe, while others propose it comes from the Aravalli Range or from Khanzada Alawal Khan Mewati, a Muslim prince. One prominent theory credits Maharaja Alaghraj, son of the ruler of Amber, with founding the city of Alpur in 1049 AD, which eventually became known as Alwar.

The city has earned the nickname "Scotland of Rajasthan," reflecting its scenic landscape and geographical appeal. Alwar is governed as a Municipal Corporation and has experienced significant growth, with a population of approximately 505,000 as of 2024, making it the eighth largest city in Rajasthan. The city sits at an elevation of 268 meters and covers an area of 202 square kilometers. Hindi is the official language spoken in Alwar. Today, the city functions as an important administrative and cultural center in Rajasthan, maintaining its historical significance while serving as a modern urban center in the state.
