While the Landcommanderij was originally founded by knights of the Teutonic Order in the 11th century to serve as a regional headquarters, the current structures were constructed between the 16th and 18th centuries. This site historically held significant importance as the administrative center for the bailiwick of the Teutonic Order in the Maas and Rhine regions.
