Aihole, historically known as Aivalli or Aryapura, is a significant archaeological site located in the Bagalkot district of Karnataka, India. Situated near the Malaprabha River and surrounded by sandstone hills and farmlands, this historic complex dates from the 4th to the 12th century CE, with the majority of its surviving structures built between the 7th and 10th centuries. Often called the cradle of Indian temple architecture, Aihole served as a primary experimental ground for the Badami Chalukya dynasty. It was here that artisans pioneered diverse construction techniques, resulting in sixteen distinct types of free-standing temples and four varieties of rock-cut shrines that later influenced the UNESCO World Heritage Site at nearby Pattadakal.

The site encompasses over 120 monuments, including Hindu, Jain, and Buddhist temples and monasteries, which coexisted in close proximity within a five-square-kilometer area. This religious diversity highlights the region's historical tolerance and cultural synthesis during the early medieval period.
