Originally a medieval fortress characterized by a central keep, defensive walls, and a moat during the 16th century, the structure underwent significant transformation beginning in 1667. Count Filippo of San Martino commissioned royal architect Amedeo di Castellamonte to redesign the façade and gardens, initiating a shift from a military stronghold to an elegant ducal home. The property was subsequently acquired by the House of Savoy in 1764, becoming a key holding for Prince Benedetto, Duke of Chablais, who oversaw further renovations to create spacious apartments and connect the castle to a new parish church via a gallery.
