Zindan Fortress
Zindan Fortress, also known as the Round Fortress, is a historic monument located in Lankaran, Azerbaijan. Constructed during the 18th century, specifically between 1747 and 1786, it was originally designed as a southern stronghold within the larger Lankaran Fortress system. Some historical accounts suggest the structure was built under the orders of Nadir Shah to serve as a strategic defensive point alongside a northern counterpart. While the main Lankaran Fortress was destroyed following its occupation by Russian troops, these two circular strongholds survived, eventually serving divergent purposes that shaped the region's military and maritime history.
The fortress holds significant historical interest due to its varied usage over the centuries. After the separation of the strongholds, the northern tower was converted into a lighthouse in 1869 and remains under the jurisdiction of the Caspian Shipping Company today. In contrast, Zindan Fortress functioned as a prison from 1869 until 1959. Notably, local reports and some historical narratives claim that Joseph Stalin served a sentence within its walls during the early 20th century, adding a layer of geopolitical intrigue to its legacy.
