Zbryzh Castle

Zbryzh Castle is a historic fortress located in the village of Zbryzh within the Kamianets-Podilskyi Raion of Khmelnytskyi Oblast, Ukraine. Situated on the banks of the Zbruch River, the structure was originally erected by General Adam Tarło, who served as the starosta of several regions including Goszczyn and Brzeg. While the exact year of construction is not recorded in available documents, the castle stands as a significant example of residential fortification built by the Polish nobility in the borderlands of the former Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. Its strategic placement near the river highlights its historical role in regional defense and administration.

By the late nineteenth century, the main body of the castle had largely disappeared, leaving only remnants of the original complex. However, the gatehouse survived and underwent restoration to serve as a two-story residential dwelling for the Gradowski family, who owned the estate until 1917. Architectural descriptions from this later period note that the adapted house featured a low roof at the front and a distinctive balcony on the first floor supported by four columns. A two-story round tower was also present at the rear of the structure, blending defensive elements with domestic living spaces.

Today, Zbryzh Castle is classified among the ruined castles of Ukraine, with little of the original edifice remaining beyond the modified gatehouse structures described in historical accounts. Despite its dilapidated condition, the site retains historical importance as a former residence of the Tarło family and a testament to the changing ownership and architectural adaptations in the Podolia region. The castle's legacy is preserved through archival records and library collections that document its transformation from a military stronghold to a private home before its eventual decline.
