Zatrič

Zatrič
wikipedia

Zatrič, also known as Zatriq, is a medieval fortress situated in Kosovo near the village of Zatrić, approximately ten kilometers north of Rahovec. Perched atop Gradište hill at an elevation of 1,013 meters, the site commands a strategic view over the White Drin valley and the city of Prizren. Constructed primarily from stone, the fortification features a distinctive layout divided into an upper town at the summit and a lower town spreading downwards. The natural geography significantly enhanced its defenses, with steep rocky cliffs reaching heights of up to fifty meters on the southern and eastern sides, while the northern side offered a plateau for additional structures. Archaeological investigations on this northern plateau have revealed remnants of ceramics, bricks, and the foundations of towers and ramps that once connected the two sections of the settlement.

The historical significance of Zatrič stems from its estimated period of use between 900 and 1400 AD, although specific written records regarding its construction or specific events remain scarce. Some historical interpretations, notably by researcher Jastrebov, suggest it was a substantial Byzantine fort capable of housing thousands of inhabitants, potentially larger than contemporary fortifications in Prizren. Today, the site exists as a protected archaeological ruin and is categorized as a historic medieval Serbian site within Kosovo. While the upper town sits on a sharp, tooth-like peak, the lower areas show evidence of polygonal facilities and squared structures. Despite the lack of detailed chronicles, the physical remains highlight its former role as a dominant military installation in the region, currently preserved as a cultural monument of significant archaeological interest.
