Yezidabad Castle

Yazdegerd Castle, also known by its native name Yezidabad qalası or the more common local titles Nakhchivangala and Kohnagala, is a historic pre-medieval fortress located in the city of Nakhchivan within the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic of Azerbaijan. Dating back to the 7th century, the structure stands as a significant remnant of the Sassanid Empire era. It derives its formal name from Yazdegerd III, who was the final king of the Sassanid dynasty, ruling between 632 and 651 AD. The castle is architecturally distinct due to its construction method, as it was built solely using mud, a technique characteristic of the region and period that highlights the ingenuity of ancient defensive engineering in arid climates.

Throughout its long history, the site has served various purposes and has undergone significant preservation efforts to ensure its survival. In 2013, the castle underwent a major restoration project aimed at stabilizing the fragile mud structures and preserving its historical integrity for future generations. Today, the fortress has been repurposed from a military stronghold into a cultural hub, currently housing a museum that showcases the rich heritage of the area. This transformation allows visitors to explore the interior grounds and learn about the strategic importance of the site during the late antiquity period while viewing exhibits related to local history.
