Wisłoujście Fortress

Wisłoujście Fortress is a historic military complex located in Gdańsk, Poland, situated along the Martwa Wisła river near the Bay of Gdańsk. Originally established in 1308, the site has undergone numerous reconstructions following periods of destruction, resulting in a unique blend of architectural styles with Gothic elements being predominant. The structure rests on a distinctive foundation of wooden crates filled with rubble to ensure stability within the waterlogged terrain. Its layout features a central circular tower that historically functioned as a lighthouse until 1785, surrounded by a brick circular battery and a four-bastion Fort Carré. The entire complex is encircled by a moat fed by the river and protected by an additional eastern sconce lined with bastions and ravelins.

The fortress holds significant historical value as a strategic defense point for the port city and was officially designated a Historic Monument of Poland in 2018. Over the centuries, the central tower saw various modifications, including the addition of a Baroque coping in the eighteenth century which was later replaced with shale after a lightning-induced fire. The site also formerly housed an eighteenth-century clock on the tower. Despite suffering heavy artillery damage during the conflicts of 1945, the fortress remains a prominent landmark. Today, it stands as a testament to centuries of military engineering evolution and is managed as part of the Historic Museum of the City of Gdańsk, preserving its legacy for visitors interested in the region's maritime and defensive history.
