Walled City of Počitelj

The Walled City of Počitelj is a historic fortified settlement located in the municipality of Čapljina within the Herzegovina-Neretva Canton of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Nestled in a dramatic natural karst amphitheater, this medieval urban nucleus serves as a prime example of traditional Balkan architecture and town planning. Although specific construction dates for individual structures vary, the fortified complex evolved primarily during the medieval and Ottoman periods, showcasing a distinct architectural style that blends defensive military features with residential and religious buildings typical of the region's history under Ottoman rule.

Recognized for its immense cultural value, the site was officially designated as a National Monument of Bosnia and Herzegovina by the Commission to Preserve National Monuments on January 21, 2003. The city functions today as an open-air museum, preserving its unique layout where stone houses cascade down the hillside toward the Neretva River. Key landmarks within the walls include the Hajji Alija Mosque and the imposing castle that guards the entrance, both of which highlight the area's strategic importance throughout centuries of regional conflict and trade. The entire historic urban site covers approximately 6.97 square kilometers and remains a protected zone dedicated to heritage conservation.

Despite suffering damage during recent conflicts in the Balkans, Počitelj has undergone significant restoration efforts to return it to its former glory. It currently stands as a major tourist attraction, drawing visitors interested in its well-preserved stone pathways, panoramic views, and layered history. The village maintains a small permanent population but thrives as a cultural destination where the past is visibly integrated into daily life. Its designation ensures that the architectural integrity of the fortress, mosque, and surrounding dwellings is maintained for future generations, marking it as one of the most significant historical sites in the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
