Vidin Grad (Gensis (vicus))

Vidin Grad is a historic fortress situated in western Serbia, specifically located on the summit of Vidojevica hill near the village of Lešnica within the Loznica municipality. While often associated with the broader region of Donji Dobrić, its strategic placement atop a steep hill provided natural defensive advantages, with terrain dropping sharply on all sides into a dry ditch that once encircled the entire structure to protect access. The site covers a plateau with a rough diameter of 50 meters and is categorized as an archaeological site linked to Roman towns and cities in the area, suggesting origins that may date back to antiquity or the early medieval period.

The architectural remains consist primarily of fortification walls constructed from roughly trimmed stone, originally estimated to be 100 centimeters thick. These defenses were reinforced by at least two towers, the ruined bases of which are still visible on the ground today. Although the specific construction year and architect are not recorded in surviving documents, the structural design reflects typical medieval military engineering intended to withstand sieges. The site is historically significant as part of the network of medieval cities in Serbia, documented by researchers such as Aleksandar Deroko in mid-20th-century studies regarding regional fortifications.

Currently, Vidin Grad exists as a ruin where little of the original grandeur remains intact. The stone walls and tower foundations are largely overgrown with vegetation, blending into the natural landscape of the hilltop. Despite its dilapidated condition, the site retains clear evidence of its past function, including the surrounding protective ditch and the layout of the central plateau. It stands today as a quiet testament to the region's turbulent history, offering visitors a glimpse into the defensive strategies of past eras while serving as an important marker for archaeologists studying Roman and medieval settlements in western Serbia.
