wikipedia

Vattakottai Fort, also known as the Circular Fort, is a historic seaside fortress located near Kanyakumari in Tamil Nadu, at the southernmost tip of India. Constructed during the 18th century, it originally served as a coastal defense fortification and barracks for the former Kingdom of Travancore. The structure was initially built by Punachal Marthandan Chempakaraman Pillai, an aristocrat associated with the royal family, to protect the region's borders. Its design and strategic importance were later enhanced under the supervision of Captain Eustachius De Lannoy, a former Dutch naval officer who commanded the Travancore Army after the Battle of Colachel. De Lannoy integrated the fort into a broader network of defenses he established throughout the kingdom, utilizing his European military expertise to strengthen local fortifications.

Architecturally, the fort is distinguished by its construction from large granite blocks, a durable material that has allowed parts of the structure to extend into the sea over time. It offers visitors picturesque views of the Arabian Sea on one side and the Western Ghats hills on the other, alongside a unique nearby beach characterized by black sands. Today, Vattakottai Fort is a protected site managed by the Indian archaeological department. Following a major recent renovation to preserve its integrity, the location has transformed into a popular tourist destination. Visitors can explore the elevated levels facing the ocean and walk through the interior grounds, experiencing a well-maintained piece of history that combines natural beauty with significant military heritage from the era of the Travancore kings.
