Vardhangad Fort

Vardhangad Fort is a historic military installation located in the Satara District of Maharashtra, India. Situated on the Bhadle-Kundla spur of the Mahadev range, it stands at an elevation of 457 meters, marking the boundary between the Koregaon and Khatav talukas. The fort was constructed between 1673 and 1674 under the direct orders of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. It served as a crucial outpost guarding the eastern frontier of his newly acquired territories during the rise of the Maratha Empire. Architecturally, it features bastions and houses significant religious structures, including temples dedicated to Vardhinidevi and Mahadev, which remain prominent landmarks on the summit.

The site holds considerable historical significance due to the various conflicts witnessed within its vicinity during the 19th century. In 1800, the fort was invested by Mahadji Shinde's massive force, leading to skirmishes involving local Ramoshis and generals. Further turbulence occurred in 1805 during an attack by Fattesingh Mane, which resulted in the death of several officers before Mane himself was killed in a subsequent battle. Control of the fort shifted hands multiple times, eventually passing to Bapu Gokhale in 1807 and later to the Peshva in 1811, before its final surrender in 1818. These events highlight its strategic importance during the decline of Maratha power.

Currently, Vardhangad Fort is owned by the Government of India and remains open to the public. The condition of the site allows for tourism, with relatively easy access routes from nearby villages such as Vardhangad and Pachangane-vadi. The ascent to the round-topped hill takes approximately fifteen to thirty minutes, offering visitors a manageable trek. Along the path, travelers encounter a revered image of Maruti associated with local legends regarding snakebite remedies, as well as two large historical ponds attributed to Muslim rulers. Today, it serves as a cultural heritage site where visitors can explore its ruins and enjoy the surrounding landscape.
