Urspelt Castle

Urspelt Castle, known locally as Schlass Ischpelt, is situated in the village of Urspelt, approximately three kilometers northeast of Clervaux in northern Luxembourg. While the site holds a history spanning over three centuries and rests upon vestiges of a structure dating back to the thirteenth century, the current building primarily originates from 1860. The architecture reflects this nineteenth-century construction, though it incorporates ancient elements such as a well from the eleventh century. Due to its historical and architectural value, the property has been officially classified as a National Monument of Luxembourg.

The castle possesses significant historical importance related to the Second World War, serving alternately as a command post and a field hospital. During the Battle of the Bulge in the winter of 1944, German forces utilized the estate as their headquarters for northern Luxembourg until they were compelled to retreat by American troops under Lieutenant Colonel Donald Paul. Following the liberation of Luxembourg, the damaged structure was abandoned and left in ruins for several decades, marking a stark contrast to its earlier strategic military role.

In recent years, the castle underwent comprehensive restoration and expansion, including a major addition in 2016 that added 1,800 square meters of space. Following three years of renovation work, the property reopened as a four-star hotel and spa resort. Today, Urspelt Castle functions as a modern hospitality destination that preserves its rich past while offering luxury accommodations. It stands as a unique example of adaptive reuse, transforming a former wartime ruin into a thriving commercial enterprise within the Ardennes region.
