Ulstrup Castle

Ulstrup Castle is a historic manor house situated in the small town of Ulstrup within Favrskov Municipality, Denmark, approximately 20 kilometers southwest of Randers. The estate's origins date back to the late 14th century under Jens Brandsen and later Queen Margaret I, though the original structure eventually vanished. The current Renaissance-style complex was established by Privy Councilor Christen Skeel, who acquired the land in 1579 and constructed the initial north wing in 1591. His son, Jørgen Skeel, significantly expanded the property between 1615 and 1617 by adding south and west wings, while the final agricultural buildings were completed in 1668. The Skeel family retained ownership until 1809, after which the estate evolved alongside the development of Ulstrup as a railway town in the mid-19th century.

Architecturally, the castle is defined by its distinctive gate wing to the east, which features two octagonal corner pavilions and a central tower topped with a lantern. Although the west wing was demolished in 1755, the remaining structures form a cohesive historical complex. In the 1920s, the estate was dissolved and much of the land was sold off, leading to a period where the grounds housed an amusement park and zoo starting in 1951. However, the property underwent a significant transformation beginning in 1980, when extensive restoration efforts were undertaken and much of the original land was reacquired. Today, Ulstrup Castle stands restored as a functioning manor house, preserving its Renaissance heritage and serving as a notable landmark in the Central Denmark Region.
