Tus Citadel
The Citadel of Tus, known locally as Arg-e Tus, is a historic fortress situated in the ancient city of Tus within the Razavi Khorasan province of Iran. Dating back to the Sasanian Empire era, this rectangular structure stands as a significant example of early Iranian military architecture. Although the specific year of its completion is not recorded in available historical documents, its construction style and scale firmly place it among the major defensive works of the Sasanian period. The citadel was strategically built to protect the region, reflecting the engineering capabilities and strategic priorities of one of the last great pre-Islamic Persian empires.
Architecturally, the fortress is distinguished by its construction materials and distinctive layout. Built primarily from brick and chineh (a type of rammed earth), the structure originally featured four circular towers positioned at each corner of its rectangular perimeter. Additionally, the inner structure included two more circular towers to bolster its defensive strength. While much of the original edifice has succumbed to the passage of time and natural decay, the remaining ruins still convey the impressive size and grandeur that characterized large Sasanian citadels. The design highlights the transition in Persian fortification techniques during this pivotal historical epoch.
Today, the Citadel of Tus exists largely as an archaeological site and ruin, yet it retains profound historical significance as a national work of Iran. It serves as a tangible link to the country's pre-Islamic past and attracts historians and tourists interested in ancient Persian civilization. Despite its deteriorated condition, the site remains an important landmark within the cultural landscape of Razavi Khorasan. Its inclusion in lists of Iranian castles and architecture underscores its value as a heritage site, offering visitors a glimpse into the military and urban planning achievements of the Sasanian dynasty in eastern Iran.
