Trolleholm Castle

Trolleholm Castle, known natively as Trolleholms slott, is a historic estate located in Svalöv Municipality within the Scania region of southern Sweden. The origins of the site date back to 1424, when it was originally known as Kattisnabbe and later as Eriksholm. During the late Middle Ages, the property served as a monastic estate before transitioning into private ownership. The current castle structure was erected during the 1530s. Over the centuries, the estate has grown significantly and now comprises 110 houses spanning approximately 12,300 acres of land. The castle holds considerable historical significance due to its long association with notable Swedish noble families. Through inheritance in 1806, the property passed to the Trolle-Bonde family, who continue to own and manage the estate today. The castle is not open to the public, maintaining its status as a private residence and working agricultural center. This continuous ownership by the same lineage for over two centuries highlights its stability and enduring importance within the regional aristocracy.

An interesting footnote in the castle's modern history involves a recurring error in popular culture. During the 1960s through the 1980s, Arrow Games featured the castle in their Scandinavian Series of jigsaw puzzles but mistakenly identified it as "Trolleheim Castle" and placed it in Norway. This mislabeling created a fictional entity that persists in some databases, as searches for the Norwegian name only reference the puzzle itself rather than a real building. Despite this confusion in commercial products, the actual Trolleholm Castle remains firmly situated in Sweden, where it continues to serve as the ancestral home of the Trolle-Bonde family.
