Trazegnies Castle

Trazegnies Castle is a historic fortress situated in the village of Trazegnies within the municipality of Courcelles, in the Belgian province of Hainaut. Originally constructed in the 11th century by Gilles I, the structure served as the seat of a powerful independent seigneurie located at the strategic borders of the Duchy of Brabant, the County of Hainaut, and the Prince-Bishopric of Liège. The castle was ruled by its own distinct dynasty for centuries, establishing it as a significant regional stronghold before suffering near-total destruction in 1554 by the armies of Henry II of France during the Italian War of 1551–1559.

Following its devastation, the castle was rebuilt and later expanded in the 17th century when Gillion-Othon de Trazegnies added a corps de logis designed in the Louis XIII architectural style. The estate faced a precarious future after the extinction of the ruling family led to its sale to a coal mining company. This industrial acquisition resulted in land partitioning and severe structural damage caused by underground subsidence, leaving the building derelict by 1926. Despite threats of demolition, the site was saved through the intervention of a civic association known as the Friends of Trazegnies Castle, which secured support from the Walloon Region to initiate a gradual restoration program.

Today, Trazegnies Castle remains partially ruined but stands as a testament to successful heritage preservation efforts. It is currently under the stewardship of the Friends of Trazegnies Castle, who manage the site and maintain its historical integrity. The castle is open to the public on designated days, allowing visitors to view surviving portions such as the north-west ruins, the historic gatehouse, and the elegant 17th-century residential wing. Its survival highlights the transition from a feudal military installation to a protected cultural landmark appreciated for its architectural evolution and resilient history.
