Trafalgar Apartments

The Îlot-Trafalgar-Gleneagles is a distinguished historic city block located on Côte-des-Neiges Road along the west slope of Mount Royal in Montreal, Quebec. Recognized as a heritage site by the Quebec government in 2002, this ensemble features four significant structures that showcase early twentieth-century residential architecture. The most prominent buildings are The Gleneagles, completed in 1930 in the Scottish Baronial style with dark brown brick and crow-stepped gables, and the Trafalgar Building, finished in 1931 with a Château Style aesthetic ranging from seven to twelve stories. These were joined by two earlier private residences, the Thompson and Sparrow houses, which date back to 1907 and 1910 respectively.

The area possesses a compelling history of preservation against urban development pressures. In the early 2000s, the older Thompson and Sparrow homes faced imminent demolition to make way for a proposed ten-story tower by the Canderel Corporation. However, just days before final municipal approval could be granted, the provincial government intervened to block the project. This action led to the official historic classification of the entire block and an extension of Mount Royal's protected perimeter, ensuring that any future modifications require strict ministerial oversight. This successful intervention preserved the unique architectural character of the slope against high-density redevelopment.

Today, the complex remains a vital part of Montreal's residential landscape. The Gleneagles was converted from rental apartments to condominiums in 1987 following its sale to the Blason real estate company, while the Trafalgar Building continues to serve as a multi-story residential structure. Together, these buildings form a cohesive architectural group that reflects the evolution of upscale housing in Montreal during the interwar period. Their survival stands as a testament to effective heritage conservation efforts, maintaining the historical integrity of the neighborhood while providing modern housing within a culturally protected zone.
