Torella dei Lombardi is a historic hillside town and comune situated in the province of Avellino within the Campania region of southern Italy. Perched at an elevation of 666 meters in the heart of the Irpinia area, it lies close to the sources of the Ofanto River. The municipality borders several neighboring towns, including Castelfranci, Nusco, and Sant'Angelo dei Lombardi. First documented in historical records during the 9th century under the name Turella, the settlement has deep roots in the region. Its strategic location and longevity have made it a notable part of the local cultural landscape, though it faced significant challenges in modern times, particularly during the devastating Irpinia earthquake of 1980 which heavily damaged the town along with many surrounding settlements.

The most prominent architectural landmark is the Lombard Candriano Castle, which stands in the middle of the town and reflects the influence of the Lombards who once dominated the area. This structure serves as a key historical sight alongside the town's 19th-century Monumental Fountain located in the lower district. While specific details regarding the castle's current interior use are sparse in available records, the town itself remains an active residential community with a population of approximately two thousand residents. The local identity is celebrated annually on September 20th in honor of its patron saint, Saint Eustace.

Beyond its architecture, Torella dei Lombardi holds a unique place in cinematic history as the final resting place of Bice Valerian, a silent film actress and the mother of renowned director Sergio Leone. Her husband, Roberto Roberti, also a significant figure in early Italian cinema, is associated with the town's legacy. Additionally, the area is linked to Giovanni Preziosi, a controversial fascist politician from the early 20th century.
