Ter Worm Castle

Ter Worm Castle is a historic estate located in the municipality of Heerlen within the Limburg Province of the Netherlands. While the site has existed since the 14th century, the current structure largely dates from the 17th century when an original 15th-century fortified building was converted into a residence. The castle features a distinctive T-shaped floor plan comprising two wings surrounded by a moat, with access provided by a marl stone bridge built in 1843. Its oldest surviving element is a corner tower that was originally round but converted to an octagonal shape during the 1600s. The architectural evolution continued into the late 19th century when Baron François de Loë remodeled the property in a neo-Gothic style under the direction of architect Lambert de Fisenne, giving the castle its present appearance.

The castle boasts a rich history involving several noble families, including the Van Hallen and Wijlre families, who rebuilt the structure in brick after a devastating fire in 1550. In the 18th century, Count Maximilian van der Heyden-Belderbusch restored the building and established formal French rococo gardens, which remain a popular feature today. During the 20th century, the estate served as housing for staff of the Orange-Nassau mine and famously hosted a large outdoor swimming pool where generations of local residents learned to swim. Although there were controversial proposals to convert the grounds into a theme park following the mine's closure, strong local protest preserved the site's character.

After falling into disrepair in the late 20th century, Ter Worm Castle was purchased and meticulously restored between 1997 and 1999 by the Van der Valk hotel chain. Today, the building functions as a hotel and restaurant, successfully blending its historical significance with modern hospitality. The reconstructed gardens, filled with roses, lavender, and boxwood, continue to serve as a favorite location for weddings and are open to the public free of charge, allowing visitors to enjoy the scenic grounds that have been cultivated since the 1700s.
