Szczecinek Castle

The Castle of the Pomeranian Dukes is a historic medieval structure located in Szczecinek, within the West Pomeranian Voivodeship of Poland. Originally constructed around 1310, the southern wing was erected on the site of a former Slavic gord. While its roots are medieval, the building currently exhibits Renaissance architectural features due to significant reconstructions carried out during the sixteenth, nineteenth, and twentieth centuries. These extensive modifications mean the castle no longer retains its original medieval characteristics, having evolved visually over several centuries of adaptation and repair.

Historically, the fortress stood on an island in Trzesiecko Lake, but land amelioration projects in the late eighteenth and nineteenth centuries lowered water levels, transforming its setting into a peninsula. The adjacent City Park was established nearby between 1875 and 1903. Following the Second World War, the site served military purposes for the Polish People's Army before being converted into a recreational ground. In 1996, the property was sold into private hands, which initially restricted public access to the courtyard and repurposed the interior for office use.

In recent years, the castle underwent a major renovation project completed in 2011, with an official opening ceremony held in September 2013. Today, the building functions as the headquarters for the Castle Conference Centre, offering event space for up to 150 people and housing an art gallery. This modern utilization ensures the preservation of the landmark while allowing it to serve as a active cultural and business hub within the town, marking a significant revival from its previous period of restricted access and military occupation.
