Świecie, Lower Silesian Voivodeship

Świecie is a small village located in the administrative district of Gmina Leśna within Lubań County, in the Lower Silesian Voivodeship of south-western Poland. Situated near the border with the Czech Republic, the settlement is historically significant for its medieval fortress, Świecie Castle. The castle, which currently stands as a ruin atop a distinctive gneiss rock formation, was first mentioned in historical records in 1329. Along with neighboring strongholds at Leśna and Czocha, it was incorporated into the Lands of the Bohemian Crown in 1346, marking its early strategic importance in the region.

The site possesses a complex political history, reflecting the shifting borders of Central Europe. Following the Peace of Prague in 1635, the estate passed to the Electorate of Saxony and later became part of Poland-Saxony. In the eighteenth century, it was owned by notable figures such as Field Marshal Jacob Heinrich von Flemming and Minister Jan Kazimierz Rayski. After the Congress of Vienna in 1815, the area was absorbed into the Prussian Province of Silesia and subsequently became part of the German Empire in 1871. Historical data from 1842 indicates the village was once a bustling community with nearly 1,800 residents, featuring multiple watermills, an oil mill, a windmill, and a brickyard.

Today, Świecie is a quiet village with a population of approximately 570 people. While the industrial activities of the nineteenth century have ceased, the ruins of Świecie Castle remain a prominent landmark and a testament to the area's turbulent past. The structure serves as a visual reminder of the region's architectural heritage, having survived centuries of ownership changes ranging from Bohemian kings to Prussian administrators. Although the castle is no longer an active residence or military fortification, its dramatic location on a rocky outcrop continues to define the character of the village within the modern Polish landscape.
