Stenhammar Palace

Stenhammar Palace is a historic country estate and mansion located just outside Flen in Södermanland County, Sweden, approximately 120 kilometers southwest of Stockholm. Situated directly beside the Western Main Line railway, the structure was originally built in 1658 by Johan Johansson Rosenhane using dimension stone. While often categorized alongside military installations in historical records due to its fortified appearance, it serves primarily as a residential palace and manor house. The estate represents a significant piece of Swedish architectural heritage from the mid-17th century, standing as a testament to the grandeur of the era's country homes.

The property holds a unique position within the Swedish royal framework, as it is owned by the State but has been leased to the royal family since 1903. Following its donation to the state by landowner Robert von Kræmer, the will stipulated that the residence should be leased to a prince of the royal house, preferably holding the title Duke of Södermanland. Before the current leaseholder, King Carl XVI Gustaf, who has occupied the palace since 1966, it was home to Prince Wilhelm. Although it functions as a royal residence, it is not officially classified as a crown palace, maintaining a distinct legal and historical status separate from the primary royal domains.

In recent years, Stenhammar has continued to serve as a venue for significant diplomatic events, highlighting its ongoing relevance in modern Swedish history. Notably, in August 2023, King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia hosted Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky at the palace during his official visit to Sweden to discuss the Russian invasion of Ukraine. This event underscored the estate's role as a private yet functional setting for high-level state affairs. Today, the palace remains in excellent condition under the care of the royal family, preserving its historical integrity while adapting to contemporary needs as a private retreat and occasional diplomatic hub.
