Șofronea

Șofronea is a commune located in Arad County, Romania, situated on the Arad Plateau approximately ten kilometers from the county capital of Arad. Comprising the villages of Șofronea and Sânpaul, the area spans nearly 35 square kilometers and had a population of 2,887 inhabitants according to the 2021 census. The locality boasts a deep historical roots, with Sânpaul first documented in 1235 and Șofronea appearing in records by 1437. Today, it functions as a dynamic economic hub with significant activity in commerce and light industry, while maintaining strong cultural ties to its past.

The most prominent landmark is the Purgly Castle complex, an architectural ensemble dating from the late 19th century that is officially registered in the national cultural patrimony. This historic estate includes the main castle building, extensive parks, and associated households. The site holds particular historical significance due to its connection to Magdolna Purgly, who was born here in 1881 and later became the wife of Admiral Miklós Horthy, the Regent of Hungary. The castle stands as a testament to the region's aristocratic heritage and remains a key feature of the local landscape.

Currently, the castle and its grounds serve as a primary tourist attraction, drawing visitors interested in both history and wellness. The commune is also renowned for its natural thermal springs, which possess therapeutic properties specifically effective for treating rheumatic diseases.
