Skandagiri

Skandagiri, also known as Kalavara Durga, is a historic mountain fortress situated in the Chikkaballapura district of Karnataka, India. Located approximately 62 kilometers from Bangalore and just 3 kilometers from Chikballapur town, the site sits at an altitude of roughly 1,450 meters. The ruins atop the peak are widely believed to have been constructed by Tipu Sultan, the ruler of the Kingdom of Mysore, serving historically as a strategic military stronghold and lookout point. Its elevated position offers commanding views over neighboring landmarks such as Nandi Hills and Muddenahalli, highlighting its past importance in regional defense and surveillance.

Today, Skandagiri is primarily renowned as a popular trekking destination managed by the Karnataka State Forest and Tourism Department. The moderately challenging trail spans about 3 kilometers, winding through dense forests and rocky terrain from Kalavara village to the summit. Due to its popularity, especially for night treks aimed at witnessing spectacular sunrises, visitors must make online reservations and adhere to strict daily limits on group sizes. Guides are available to assist trekkers on this journey, which typically takes two to three hours to complete depending on the pace and conditions.

Upon reaching the summit, visitors encounter the remnants of the ancient fort alongside a small temple and a pond. The site is famous for its surreal atmosphere, often featuring a sea of clouds that envelops the landscape during early morning hours.
