Sinaia

Sinaia is a historic mountain resort town located in Prahova County, Romania, within the Muntenia region. Situated in the Prahova River valley just east of the Bucegi Mountains, it lies approximately 65 kilometers northwest of Ploiești and 48 kilometers south of Brașov. The town derives its name from the Sinaia Monastery, which was founded in 1695 and named after the Biblical Mount Sinai. Serving as the spiritual and geographical nucleus of the area, the monastery predates the town's development into a prominent destination. The settlement sits at an altitude ranging between 767 and 860 meters above sea level, providing a scenic backdrop of dense forests and rugged peaks that define its landscape.

The town gained significant historical prominence in the late nineteenth century when King Carol I of Romania selected it as the site for his summer residence, the magnificent Peleș Castle. Built in a striking Neo-Renaissance architectural style, the castle became a symbol of the Romanian monarchy and remains the area's most famous landmark. Alongside the nearby Pelișor Castle, the Sinaia Casino, and the historic train station, these structures transformed the village into a cultural hub. The area also served as a retreat for renowned figures such as the composer George Enescu, who stayed at the Luminiș villa, further cementing the town's reputation as an artistic sanctuary.

Today, Sinaia functions as a year-round tourist destination celebrated for both its rich heritage and outdoor recreational opportunities. It is a popular center for hiking during the warmer months and downhill skiing in the winter, benefiting from a humid continental climate that ensures heavy snowfall from November through April. While the town has seen population fluctuations over the last century, it maintains its status as a key attraction in the Carpathians. Visitors come to explore the well-preserved royal castles, the ancient monastery, and the natural beauty of the Franz Joseph and Saint Anne Cliffs, making it a vital part of Romania's tourism infrastructure.
