Sikar

Sikar, historically linked to the broader Shekhawati region of Rajasthan, India, derives much of its early political significance from the rise of Raja Raisal Darbari, the first Shekhawat ruler of Khandela. Although the specific fortress known as Sikar Fort was developed later by his descendants, the foundation of Shekhawat power in this area was established between 1584 and 1614 under Raisal's leadership. Born in 1538 into the Kachwaha clan of the Amber Royal Family, Raisal was a great-grandson of Rao Shekha. He initially received a small estate in Lamiya before entering the imperial service of Emperor Akbar in Delhi, where his military prowess earned him the title of Raja and a high-ranking Mansab of 3000 cavalrymen.

The architectural and political landscape of the region was shaped by Raisal's successful conquests of four parganas, including Khandela, from the Nirban and Chandel dynasties. These territories were recognized by Akbar as his hereditary Watan Jagir, solidifying Shekhawat dominance for over five centuries. While the specific stone structures visible today often reflect later renovations, the original strongholds were built in the traditional Rajput military style, characterized by strategic hilltop placements and robust fortifications designed to withstand siege warfare. The Shekhawats became honored as Tazimi Sirdars, a distinction so profound that the Maharaja of Jaipur would traditionally rise from his seat to receive them.

Raja Raisal died in 1614 in Burhanpur while on campaign in South India, leaving behind a legacy of twelve sons who continued to expand their influence. The region remains historically significant as a center of Rajput culture and resistance, with the ruling family maintaining their status through generations. Today, the area is renowned for its heritage sites, which serve as reminders of the martial history and administrative acumen of the Shekhawat rulers who transformed this part of Rajasthan into a powerful principality within the Mughal framework.
