Shirgaon Fort

Shirgaon Fort, also known as Shirgao Fort, is a historic sea fort situated in Shirgaon village within the Palghar district of Maharashtra, India. Located approximately 6.5 kilometers from the town of Palghar and about 109 kilometers from Mumbai, the structure was originally constructed in 1225 AD during the reign of the Yadava dynasty of Devgiri. Built primarily from black basalt stone, the fort features a rectangular layout with robust masonry that has withstood centuries of coastal exposure. Its architectural design includes an east-facing entrance gate followed by a second gate positioned at a right angle, near which the year 1714 is inscribed. The defensive perimeter is marked by five bastions; four octagonal towers stand at the corners, while a unique circular bastion guards the main entrance.

The fort holds significant historical value due to its strategic role along the Konkan coast and its succession of rulers. After passing through the hands of Gujarati Muslim rulers and the Bahamani Dynasty, it came under the control of the Ahmadnagar Sultanate before being captured by the Portuguese in the early 16th century. The Maratha Empire successfully seized the fort in January 1739 following the siege of Vasai and subsequently undertook repairs in 1772. British forces eventually took control in 1818, maintaining ownership through the East India Company and the British Raj until Indian independence in 1947. Today, the property is owned by the Government of India and remains open to the public.

Despite its age, Shirgaon Fort is noted for being in excellent condition, with its outer walls, steps, parapets, and guard vestibules largely intact. Visitors can walk the entire length of the parapet wall in about an hour to view the well-preserved structures. The site serves as an accessible historical landmark for tourists exploring the region, with adequate lodging available in nearby Palghar and Shirgaon. Its enduring state offers a rare glimpse into medieval military architecture and the complex colonial history of western India.
