Sforza Castle

Sforza Castle, known locally as Castello Sforzesco, is a prominent medieval fortification situated in the heart of Milan, northern Italy. Originally constructed between 1358 and 1370 by Galeazzo II Visconti on the site of an ancient Roman castra, the structure was initially a defensive stronghold for the Visconti family. After its destruction in 1447 during the brief Golden Ambrosian Republic, it was rebuilt starting in 1450 by Francesco Sforza, the Duke of Milan, to serve as a princely residence. The castle underwent significant expansion over the following centuries, eventually becoming one of the largest citadels in Europe during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, characterized by massive walls and a distinctive square plan with corner towers.

The architectural evolution of the castle reflects its rich history, blending medieval military design with Renaissance artistic embellishments. Notable features include the central Torre del Filarete, designed by the architect Filarete in 1452, and various rooms frescoed by the legendary Leonardo da Vinci under the patronage of Ludovico Sforza in the late fifteenth century. Following periods of foreign domination and military use that lasted until 1862, the complex fell into disrepair. It was extensively restored between 1891 and 1905 by architect Luca Beltrami, who meticulously reconstructed its historical appearance while adapting it for modern civic use.

Today, owned by the Municipality of Milan, the castle stands as a fully restored cultural landmark open to the public. It no longer serves a military function but instead houses several of the city's most important museums and art collections. The grounds feature scenic courtyards and fountains, inviting visitors to explore its layered past from Roman times through the Sforza dynasty. As a testament to Milanese heritage, Sforza Castle remains a vital center for art and history, preserving the legacy of the artists and rulers who shaped its identity over six hundred years.
