Selasal castle

Salasel Castle, also known as Ghaleh Salasel, is a historic fortress located in the island city of Shushtar within Khuzestan Province, Iran. Although some sources associate the site with the Achaemenid era, the complex is primarily recognized as a significant component of the Shushtar Historical Hydraulic System, an engineering marvel dating back to the Sassanid period. Perched atop a mountain, the castle features a multi-level design equipped with secret tunnels, defensive walls, and towers that highlight its strategic military importance. It serves as a central hub within the larger hydraulic network, which includes twelve other historical bridges, dams, and canals.

The site holds immense historical significance as Iran's tenth cultural property to be inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2009. This designation acknowledges the location under criteria representing a masterpiece of human creative genius and an outstanding example of traditional human settlement.
