Seggiano

Seggiano is a historic municipality located in the Province of Grosseto within the Tuscany region of Italy. Situated approximately 100 kilometers south of Florence and 40 kilometers northeast of Grosseto, the town rests on the northwestern foothills of the volcanic Monte Amiata at an elevation of 491 meters. Its strategic position offers a commanding view over the Orcia river valley and its tributaries, the Vivo and Ente. The territory spans nearly 50 square kilometers of hilly and mountainous terrain, bordering Castiglione d'Orcia, Abbadia San Salvatore, and Castel del Piano. This unique microclimate and exposure allow for the cultivation of the Olivastra Seggianese, a distinctive olive variety grown at unusually high altitudes that produces highly regarded olive oil.

The origins of Seggiano date back to the early 10th century when it was established as a possession of the Abbey of San Salvatore al Monte Amiata. Over the centuries, control shifted to the Abbey of Saint Antimo before coming under the dominion of Siena in the late 13th century. During this period, the influential Salimbeni and Ugurgeri families exerted significant power over the area until the mid-16th century. In 1555, the town was incorporated into the Grand Duchy of Tuscany, marking a new chapter in its administrative history. Today, it remains a small community with a population under one thousand residents, preserving its medieval roots amidst the Tuscan landscape.

In modern times, Seggiano has gained cultural significance beyond its agricultural heritage due to the nearby Giardino di Daniel Spoerri. This renowned sculpture garden, created by the Swiss artist Daniel Spoerri, features numerous large-scale installations integrated into the natural environment, attracting art enthusiasts from around the world. While the town maintains its traditional character, this artistic addition provides a unique contrast between ancient history and contemporary creativity. The local government continues to manage the comune, which serves as a quiet gateway to both the Monte Amiata massif and the scenic Val d'Orcia.
