Schloss Brunnenburg

Brunnenburg, also known as Castel Fontana, is a historic castle located above the city of Merano on the outskirts of Tirol in the South Tyrol province of northern Italy. Originally constructed around 1250 during the 13th century, the structure represents medieval architecture typical of the Alpine region. While an 1845 engraving once depicted the site as ruins, the castle underwent a comprehensive restoration and modernization effort in the mid-20th century. This significant renovation transformed the property from a dilapidated state into a well-preserved landmark that retains its historical character while serving contemporary functions.

The castle holds profound literary significance due to its deep connection with the American poet Ezra Pound. In 1958, Pound resided at the estate with his daughter, Mary de Rachewiltz, and her husband, the Egyptologist Boris de Rachewiltz, who led the restoration efforts. It was within these walls that Pound composed the final six cantos of his monumental work, The Cantos, before his death. Mary de Rachewiltz continues to reside at the castle today, maintaining the family's long-standing presence on the grounds, which also include a private vineyard surrounding the historic structure.

Currently, the castle serves as an active cultural hub through the Ezra Pound Centre for Literature, established by Mary to promote the study of her father's works. The facility hosts students from around the globe who come for semester-long programs to analyze Pound's poetry and legacy. A large guesthouse on the property provides temporary accommodation for these visiting scholars, ensuring the castle remains a vibrant center for literary education rather than a static museum. This unique blend of residential history, agricultural tradition, and academic pursuit makes Brunnenburg a distinctive site in the Italian Alps.
