Schauwenburg Castle

Schauwenburg Castle is a historic fortress located in Bertrange, in the south-western region of Luxembourg. While the site's history extends back to the Middle Ages, with records from the early 13th century indicating that the Lords of Bertrange occupied a fortified structure there, the current building primarily originates from the 16th century. The architecture prominently features Renaissance-style windows on the eastern and northern wings, showcasing the artistic trends of that era. The façade of the castle was later completed in 1710, adding to its distinct visual character and marking a significant phase in its structural evolution over the centuries.

The castle holds notable historical significance due to its long lineage of ownership and adaptation. Around 1780, the d'Huart family, who resided at the property, found the existing facilities insufficient for their needs. Consequently, they constructed a larger residence known as the Château de Colnet d'Huart nearby, leaving the original Schauwenburg structure to serve other purposes. Throughout its existence, the castle has passed through many different hands and been utilized for a variety of functions, reflecting the changing social and administrative needs of the local community.

In its modern condition, Schauwenburg Castle continues to serve a vital public role rather than standing as a mere ruin or private museum. Since 2008, the building has temporarily housed the administrative offices of the Commune of Bertrange, effectively functioning as the town hall. This contemporary use ensures the preservation of the historic edifice while keeping it active within daily civic life. Its transition from a medieval fortification to a Renaissance home and finally to a center of local government illustrates the enduring relevance of this architectural landmark in Luxembourgish heritage.
