Schaloen Castle

Schaloen Castle is a historic national monument located in Oud-Valkenburg, within the South Limburg municipality of Valkenburg aan de Geul in the Netherlands. Situated in the meadows of the Geul river, the rectangular structure is surrounded by a wide canal fed by the Molenbeek branch. Originally constructed from marlstone in the 12th century, the castle has undergone significant transformations throughout its existence. After suffering a devastating fire in 1575, it was restored in 1656 by the Hoen van Cartils family. The building acquired its current distinctive appearance in 1894 following a thorough renovation by renowned architect Pierre Cuypers, who redesigned the facade in a neo-Gothic style, adding a west tower, stair tower, and raised corner turrets.

The site holds considerable historical significance as part of the protected village face of Oud Valkenburg and the Buitengoed Geul & Maas landscape. Its complex history includes periods of vacancy, ownership by the De Villers Masbourg d'Eclaye family, and internal destruction during the billeting of American soldiers at the end of the Second World War in 1946. Following post-war repairs in 1956, the main building was made habitable once again. The grounds also feature a 17th-century watermill that now serves as a demonstration mill, a tithe barn converted into a hotel, and a public Limburg botanical garden maintained by the local IVN association.

Today, Schaloen Castle functions as a mixed-use heritage site combining residential and commercial purposes. Since 1986, the main castle has housed hotel apartments, while parts of the outer bailey operate as a café with a tea garden. The historic gatehouse, renovated in the 18th century and later converted into a caretaker's residence, currently provides catering services. This blend of architectural preservation and modern utility ensures the castle remains an active landmark, offering visitors a glimpse into centuries of Dutch history while serving as a unique accommodation and leisure destination in the scenic Geul valley.
