Savoy Castle

Savoy Castle, also known as Bilje Castle, is a prominent Baroque-style palace located in the town of Bilje within the Baranja region of northeastern Croatia. Commissioned by the renowned military leader Prince Eugene of Savoy, the structure was built between 1707 and 1712 to serve as a hunting lodge and administrative center for his vast estates. The design of this quadrangular complex is widely attributed to Johann Lukas von Hildebrandt, the Prince's favorite architect, although definitive confirmation remains elusive due to the loss of private archives. The building measures approximately 56 by 57 meters and features a central courtyard, blending elegant residential architecture with practical considerations for its time.

The historical significance of the castle stems from the Battle of Zenta in 1697, where Prince Eugene's victory over the Ottoman Empire earned him extensive land grants from Emperor Leopold I. These holdings included over 100,000 acres of land, which were managed from this estate. Unusually for a hunting lodge, the castle is surrounded by defensive earth walls and a moat. These features were not intended for formal warfare but rather to protect the inhabitants from local bandit gangs and residual Turkish raiding parties prevalent in the region during the early 18th century. Following the Prince's death, the property passed to the Teschen branch of the Habsburg-Lorraine family.

After the conclusion of the First World War, the castle was expropriated and transformed into a state-owned agricultural estate, a function it continues to serve today. Despite its transition from a noble residence to an agricultural hub, the site remains a key historical landmark in the Baranja region. The structure stands as a testament to Prince Eugene's influence in Croatia and the architectural trends of the era, preserving the legacy of one of Europe's most celebrated military commanders within its enduring walls.
