Subcetate

Subcetate, historically known as Valkóváralja, is a village within the Valcău de Jos commune located in Sălaj County, Crișana, Romania. Situated approximately 14 kilometers southwest of Șimleu Silvaniei at an elevation of 242 meters, it is one of six villages comprising the local administrative unit. The area derives its name from the Slavic word for wolf, reflecting the region's deep historical roots. While the broader commune has a mixed demographic history involving Romanians, Hungarians, and Roma populations, Subcetate itself is primarily noted for its medieval heritage rather than its modern population statistics.

The focal point of the village is the Valcău Citadel, a medieval fortress constructed in the late 13th century. This structure played a notable role in regional conflicts, including an unlawful occupation by Dezső Elefánti in 1312 and a subsequent siege by King Sigismund of Luxemburg in 1404. The castle met a destructive end in 1665 when Ottoman forces razed the fortification. Unlike many other historical sites in the region, the citadel was never rebuilt following this devastation. Today, it stands as a designated historic monument in a ruined state, offering a tangible link to the area's turbulent military past during the Middle Ages and the Ottoman wars.

Currently, Subcetate serves as a site of historical interest within the rural landscape of northwestern Romania. The ruins of the castle remain a significant landmark, categorized officially as a historic monument alongside the 19th-century Reformed Church found in the neighboring main village of Valcău de Jos. Although the fortress no longer serves any defensive or residential function, its remnants contribute to the cultural identity of the commune.
