Salher

Salher Fort, historically known as Gavalgarh, is situated in the Satana tehsil of the Nashik district in Maharashtra, India. Standing at an elevation of 1,566 meters within the Dolbari Range of the Sahyadri mountains, it holds the distinction of being the highest fort in the region and the second-highest peak in Maharashtra after Kalsubai. Constructed primarily from stone, lime, and lead, the site represents a significant example of Maratha military architecture. Although the exact year of construction is not specified in available records, it served as a crucial stronghold for the Maratha Empire during the 17th century. The historical significance of Salher is anchored in the pivotal Battle of Salher fought in 1672, where Maratha forces led by Shrimant Sardar Suryajirao Kakade defeated the Mughal army in one of the largest face-to-face engagements of the era. This victory allowed the Marathas to capture nearby Mulher and establish dominance over the Baglan region. The fort also played a strategic economic role, serving as the initial repository for wealth acquired during raids on Surat before it was transported to the Maratha capital. Following the Maratha era, the fort was occupied by the Peshwas in the 18th century and later came under British control.

Currently, Salher Fort is owned by the Government of India and remains open to the public, though its condition is described as dilapidated. Despite its state of disrepair, the site retains several notable features, including rock-cut steps, walkways, water cisterns, and the Gangasagar Lake. Visitors can also explore the Shree Parshuram Maharaj Temple located within the complex. As a landmark of immense historical and geographical importance, it continues to attract trekkers and history enthusiasts interested in the legacy of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and the Maratha Empire.
