Rożnów

Rożnów
wikipedia

Rożnów is a village situated in southern Poland within the administrative district of Gmina Gródek nad Dunajcem, part of Nowy Sącz County in the Lesser Poland Voivodeship. While the settlement itself functions as a local community with a population of approximately 1,700 residents, it is historically and geographically defined by its proximity to the Dunajec River. The area is perhaps best known not for a traditional medieval fortress, but for the monumental Rożnów Dam, a significant engineering project that fundamentally altered the local landscape and economy during the twentieth century.

The dam and its associated power station were constructed between 1935 and 1941, following the catastrophic flood of July 1934. This disastrous event, recorded as the largest flood in the history of the Second Polish Republic, claimed fifty-five lives and caused immense economic damage estimated at sixty million interbellum zlotys. Built primarily as a flood control measure to prevent such tragedies from recurring, the structure successfully created Lake Rożnów. The reservoir took two years to fill, extending along an eighty-kilometer stretch of the river with depths reaching up to thirty meters, transforming the valley into a major water body.

Today, Rożnów serves as a hub for tourism and recreation centered around the artificial lake. The site represents a critical piece of modern Polish infrastructure history rather than ancient architectural heritage. The transformation from a flood-prone river valley to a managed reservoir highlights the region's resilience and adaptation in the face of natural disasters. Visitors are drawn to the area for its scenic waters and the historical significance of the dam, which stands as a testament to early twentieth-century engineering efforts to tame the powerful Dunajec River and protect the surrounding communities.
