Rosenburg

Rosenburg is a historic Renaissance castle located in the municipality of Rosenburg-Mold in Lower Austria, Austria. Perched dramatically on a cliff 345 meters above sea level, it overlooks the valley of the River Kamp within the scenic Naturpark Kamptal nature reserve. Although the site's origins date back to 1175 with an initial Romanesque structure, the castle visible today largely reflects a major reconstruction undertaken between 1593 and 1597. During this period, the previous Gothic fortifications were demolished and replaced with a magnificent Renaissance complex featuring thirteen distinctive towers. The property has been restored to excellent condition and remains under the ownership of the Hoyos-Sprinzenstein family.

The castle holds profound historical significance as a former stronghold against Hungarian invaders and, more notably, as a central hub of the Protestant Reformation in Austria. In the 16th century, the Grabner family, who owned the estate, converted to Lutheranism and transformed Rosenburg into a center for Protestant faith and learning, even establishing a printing press within its walls to distribute religious literature. Despite being razed by Hussite forces in 1433, the site was repeatedly expanded and fortified, evolving from a medieval defensive position into a stately residence that witnessed key religious and military conflicts in Central European history.

Currently, Rosenburg stands as one of Austria's most visited castles and is open to the public for tours. Its unique setting amidst a protected natural landscape enhances its appeal to visitors interested in both architecture and history. The site is so culturally ingrained in the national consciousness that it is widely believed to be the specific fortress referenced in the famous Austrian folk song "Es liegt ein Schloss in Österreich." Today, it serves as a well-preserved monument offering insights into medieval military engineering, Gothic chapel design, and the turbulent religious history of the region.
